# 3DS Authentication

3D Secure (3DS) authentication is used to verify your customer during an eCommerce card payment and support Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements.

The Payments API supports **two distinct 3DS integration models**, depending on **who performs the authentication**:

Integrated 3DS
**Worldpay** orchestrates 3DS authentication for you, including device data collection, issuer challenge handling, and payment continuation.

External 3DS
Submit authentication results from **your own 3DS provider** when the customer has already completed authentication outside of Payments API.

Only one 3DS type can be used per payment.
